Backend engineer postings divide into two lanes that the title alone does not distinguish. Product-backend roles build the APIs and services behind a specific application — the work is feature-shaped, paired with frontend and product teams, and measured in user outcomes. Platform and infrastructure roles build systems for other engineers — queues, internal tools, data platforms, deployment systems — and are measured in reliability and developer leverage. Both are real backend work; the interview loops, growth paths, and day-to-day differ enough that you should know which one a posting is before applying.

Stack signals in 2026: Go, Python, TypeScript (Node), and Java/Kotlin dominate postings, with Rust appearing mostly in infrastructure and performance-critical niches. PostgreSQL is the default database ask. Kubernetes and one major cloud (AWS most often) are assumed at mid-level and above. Event streaming (Kafka or a managed equivalent) shows up in a large share of senior postings. AI-adjacent backend roles — serving model APIs, building retrieval pipelines, managing inference costs — are a fast-growing slice and mostly want strong conventional backend skills plus comfort with the new failure modes.

Seniority is legible in the posting verbs. "Build and maintain APIs" is mid-level. "Own services end-to-end including on-call," "define SLOs," and "lead design reviews" are senior. "Set technical direction across teams" is staff scope regardless of the title on the posting.

Postings worth skepticism: a backend role listing four languages and three clouds as requirements usually reflects an unmerged wishlist from several stakeholders. "DevOps responsibilities" inside a backend posting at a small company can mean you are the infrastructure team — fine if you want that, but it changes the job. And any posting silent on on-call deserves a direct question in the first call, because the answer always exists.

Use the listings below as your feed. PrismCV crawls the major boards and de-duplicates across them. The live salary data above reflects what current postings for this role advertise; run the ATS Checker against any posting you are serious about before applying, since backend JDs are keyword-dense and screeners lean on them.

Frequently asked questions

Search by the language you are strongest in plus one you are credibly learning — most companies hire for depth in one and willingness in others. Go and Python currently have the widest posting coverage; Java/Kotlin dominates enterprise; TypeScript backend roles cluster at product startups. Filtering by problem domain (payments, infrastructure, data) usually beats filtering by language.

Backend work reviews well asynchronously, so remote-first companies hire it heavily, but on-call changes the calculus: distributed teams need coverage across time zones, which can be an advantage if you are outside the company's core zone. Confirm what "remote" means for the rotation before accepting.

Ask three questions in the loop: what does the on-call load actually look like (pages per week, not policy), how do schema and API changes get reviewed, and when was the last postmortem and what changed because of it. Teams with good answers have engineering cultures worth joining; teams that flinch are telling you something.
