Full stack engineers ship features end-to-end across the frontend, backend, and database layers. The role is common at startups and small teams where a single engineer owns a feature from UI to data.

Full stack engineer is the default engineering hire at startups and the most variable title in tech postings. At a seed-stage company it means everything: frontend, backend, database, deploys, and the pager. At a mid-size product company it usually means feature work across a defined stack with platform teams handling infrastructure. At larger companies, "full stack" postings are often frontend-heavy product roles with API work attached. The title tells you little; the team size and the responsibilities paragraph tell you everything.
The dominant 2026 posting stack is TypeScript end-to-end: React or Next.js on the frontend, Node on the backend, PostgreSQL underneath, deployed on one of the major clouds or a platform like Vercel. Rails and Django shops remain a meaningful minority and tend to say so explicitly. The fastest-growing requirement is AI-feature literacy — wiring model APIs into products, building retrieval over product data, handling streaming responses in the UI — which postings increasingly fold into ordinary full stack expectations rather than separate AI roles.
Full stack demand concentrates at the stages where one engineer owning a whole feature is the economic unit: seed through Series C startups, agencies, and product teams inside larger companies organized around feature pods. These roles trade some specialization depth for scope and shipping speed — the engineers who thrive in them like owning outcomes more than owning layers.
Read postings for the giveaways. "Full stack" plus a list of infrastructure tools means you are also the platform team. "Full stack (frontend focus)" means frontend with occasional API endpoints. A posting from a team of three that mentions on-call, AWS, and React in one sentence is a founding-engineer-shaped role whatever the title says — which can be exactly the right job if scope is what you want.
