Frontend engineer postings span a wider range of actual work than the title suggests. At one company the role is product feature work in React with a design partner; at another it is design-system and platform work serving other engineers; at a third it is performance engineering on a high-traffic surface where milliseconds are revenue. Read the team description and the day-to-day responsibilities, not the title — the interview loops and the growth paths differ substantially between these.

The 2026 market has consolidated heavily around TypeScript and React, with Next.js as the most commonly named meta-framework. Vue and Svelte shops exist and tend to say so prominently in the posting. The newer screening criteria are React Server Components and modern rendering architecture, Core Web Vitals literacy, and accessibility — WCAG familiarity has moved from nice-to-have to a listed requirement at many companies. AI-assisted development tooling shows up in postings too, but as an accelerant expectation rather than a separate skill.

Seniority bands are visible in the posting language. "Build features with the design team" is a mid-level product role. "Own the component library," "define frontend architecture," or "set performance budgets" signal senior and staff scope. If a posting lists both deep design-system work and full ownership of multiple product surfaces, the team is likely understaffed — worth asking about directly in the first call.

Warning signs worth respecting: postings that list every frontend framework at once usually mean the team has not decided its stack or inherited several. "Full stack with frontend focus" often means a backend-heavy role where frontend is the part nobody else wants. And a frontend posting with no mention of designers means you may be doing design too — fine if you want it, but know going in.

Frequently asked questions

TypeScript and React are assumed. What differentiates: measurable performance work (Core Web Vitals with before/after numbers), accessibility experience with a named standard, design-system contributions, and evidence of architectural judgment (SSR/RSC migrations, state-management decisions). Postings increasingly screen for these explicitly.

Yes, though the mix has shifted toward hybrid at larger companies. Remote-first companies still hire frontend heavily because the work reviews well asynchronously (PRs, deployed previews, recorded demos). Filter by remote on the listings and check whether "remote" in the posting means remote-US or remote-anywhere — comp and tax handling differ.

Build the evidence the title change requires: one project with real performance numbers (run Lighthouse before/after on something you fixed), one with accessibility work, and TypeScript throughout. Agency and freelance work counts if you frame outcomes per client. The gap is usually framing, not skill.
